Rob Moore Steers Higher Age of Consent Bill through Committee
April 17, 2007 -– Rob Moore, M.P. for Fundy Royal and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice successfully steered C-22: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (age of protection) through the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.
"The Conservative Government brought C-22 forward to prevent the exploitation of children from adult sexual predators," said Moore, "We are sending a message to the world that Canada is not the destination that it was for people who want to have sex with 14 and 15-year-olds."
Bill C-22 An Act to amend the Criminal Code (age of protection), was brought forward on June 22, 2006. It proposes to better protect youth against adult sexual predators by raising the age of consent from 14 to 16 years and renames it The Age of Protection. This bill is a key component of the government's tackling crime commitment.
"I want to give a special thank you to the Canadian Police Association, Motivated Young People for a Strong Canada, Canadian Resource Centre for Victims of Crime and the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre for their testimony and continued support of this legislation."
Bill C-22 will now be sent back to the House of Commons for report and third reading prior to being sent to the Senate.
