Chairman Shao Qiwei of the China National Tourism Administration and Minister Rob Moore discuss the Approved Destination Status Agreement
Tourism Agreement Between Canada and China Implemented
June 23, 2010 -- Ottawa -- The Honourable Rob Moore was pleased to represent our government as Minister of Small Business and Tourism, at a meeting and banquet prior to the signing of the Approved Destination Status Agreement with the Chinese government. Chinese National Tourism Administration Chairman Shao Qiwei and members of the CNTA as well as the Canadian Tourism Commission were also present at the event, which recognized the historic nature of this agreement.
Minister Moore welcomed the officials from China, stating "Your tour of Canada is a wonderful opportunity to establish the foundation for an important tourism partnership for years to come. As Minister responsible for Tourism, I am truly delighted to officially receive you here in Ottawa. I hope that you get to experience and explore our country’s unique and authentic attractions."
In 2008, visits to Canada by Chinese citizens grew by more than 5% from the year before. In 2009, despite the tough challenges facing the global tourism industry, arrivals to Canada from China continued to grow.
The Approved Destination Status agreement, signed the next day by the President of China and the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, will add Canada to the list of countries officially approved for travel by the Chinese government. It has been supported by the Canadian Tourism Commission and Chinese tourism officials.
